AiAi vs Billy Hatcher (Super Monkey Ball vs Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg)
“The struggle itself towards the heights is enough to fill a man’s heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy.” - Albert Camus
AiAi, the leader of Super Monkey Ball team
Billy Hatcher, the savior of Morning Land.
Love him or hate him, Sonic the Hedgehog has become a staple of video game history, currently standing as the face of SEGA. But we’re not here to talk about him! Instead we’re gonna be looking into 2 other SEGA creations. They may not be at the same height of popularity, but they still deserve a chance in the spotlight. Time to see which of these two characters will roll their way into a victory.
Before We Start…
The research for both is pretty straightforward. Billy especially is incredibly simple, since he’s only got one game to cover.
Super Monkey Ball on the other hand is a more expansive video game series, but the majority of its games offer very little to talk about, so really only around half of them have anything to cover from a vs perspective. A list of all of them can be found here. There’s 2 games here that I wasn’t able to look through. One of them was Monkey Ball (2003) for the J-Phones and the other was Super Monkey Ball Uki-Uki Sesaw. The former is lost to time, with only a handful of screenshots of it existing, but I’d be insanely surprised if it offered anything to begin with. The latter was a japan exclusive game, but from screenshots of it, it seems it was just a japanese port of the Super Monkey Ball: Tip ‘n Tilt game, so it’s unlikely it would’ve provided anything (the Tip ‘n Tilt games don’t provide much in the first place).
There is one game I should mention, and that is Super Monkey Ball Bounce. It’s a now defunct mobile game that I was able to find an apk for and try it for myself, but I was never able to complete it. The reason is because I wasn’t able to use the game’s in-game currency, which requires an internet connection. Since the game’s servers were shut down, it means that I’d have to play the entire game without being able to buy anything, which uh, no. The game is incredibly hard to progress without using items, and I have to wait half an hour just for one retry to charge (you can have a max of 4). So the game would take weeks to finish at that point. Sadly I couldn’t find much gameplay that covered the entire game, so I’m not familiar with what feats it could provide.
Now the last thing I wanna mention for both is their crossover stuff. Both of them have been featured in SEGA crossover games, especially AiAi. I will be listing all the things they get from those games for the sake of completion, but I will not be factoring them into the verdict. I’d prefer to cover this match up with what they themselves can bring to the table.
One specific game I wanna mention is Sega Heroes, since it was the only one I wasn’t familiar with. I did look through it and while I did cover it, it is possible I may have still missed something, considering it’s an rpg game. While it looked interesting, I didn’t care to look into it that much, especially with how expansive it seemed.
Also huge thanks to monev_lartsim for providing the calcs in this blog.
Background
AiAi
Main character of the Super Monkey Ball series, husband of MeeMe, father of Baby and leader of the Super Monkey Ball team. AiAi is a resident of Jungle Island, residing in a small and peaceful monkey village. That is until one day, the island was suddenly attacked by an army of gorillas, alongside their leader, GonGon. Thankfully, AiAi and his family were able to escape. After this frightful encounter, a mysterious deity called the Grand Monkey appeared in AiAi’s dreams, telling him about a sacred place in the sky called Banana Island, where you could eat as many bananas as you’d want. However, the journey to such a place would be filled with countless traps and obstacles. For that reason, they taught AiAi the magical spell “Ei-Ei-Poo!”, creating his iconic Monkey Ball. The team was finally able to make it to Banana Island and claim their reward, leaving GonGon with nothing left.
But it seems yesterday’s enemy was just tomorrow’s friend, as AiAi and GonGon made up with each other and are now best friends. From this point on AiAi and his team have gone through a lot more adventures, making even more friends along the way.
They were able to put a stop to the time travelling Dr Bad Boon when he was trying to steal all of Jungle Island’s Bananas. They defeated Captain Crabuchin and his minions who had stolen the golden Banana Bunch, alongside their new friends YanYan and Doctor. They even stopped the Phantom Thief Easel from obtaining the Legendary Banana, by getting rid of the curse the OOParts had over him. All thanks to their newest member and daughter of Easel, Palette.
All in all, there’s clearly just nothing that can get in the way of this banana loving Monkey and his friends.
Billy Hatcher
Morning Land is but a peaceful realm inhabited by chickens, that exists separately from our world. All things would change though once the crow invasion had started. Through some strange power, the crows had taken various monstrous forms, with the sole goal of plunging the world in eternal darkness. All under the guide of their leader, Dark Raven. The army was successful in trapping all the great Chicken Elders inside golden eggs. Since the elders are the ones that raise the morning sun, Morning Land was now truly in darkness.
Enter Billy Hatcher, a regular kid from our regular world. One day while hanging out with his friends, Billy saw a helpless chick getting attacked by crows. Knowing what he has to do, Billy grabbed a stick in his hand and saved its life. This display of courage was sensed by the god of the chickens, Menie Funie, who summoned Billy into his world afterwards. He told Billy that Morning Land desperately needed help, or the darkness would spread even to Billy’s world. Billy agreed to help, and so Menie Funie guided him to the one thing he’d need for this journey: the Legendary Chicken Suit. Now having complete control over the eggs, he’d roll his way through the armies of crows.
Alongside his friends Rolly Roll, Chick Poacher and Bantam Scrambled, they were able to wipe out all the various crows and their bosses, opening the way to the Giant Palace. There Billy would have one last showdown with Dark Raven, who at that point had taken control over the Giant Egg, a legendary egg that could offer great power to anyone that hatches it. Dark Raven succeeded in doing so, growing powerful enough to destroy Billy’s chicken suit. However that wasn’t enough, as Billy had shown true courage throughout his journey. This was able to restore his chicken suit, getting him ready for round 2. This time, he finally put an end to Dark Raven, thus saving Morning Land.
After everything that happened, Billy and his friends would say their goodbies, as Menie Funie would return the heroes of Morning Land back to their world.
Experience & Skill
AiAi
That’s not all though. He’s also got experience with a variety of sports like baseball, golf, soccer, fencing, snowboarding etc. And despite not looking like it, he very much can throw hands himself if needed. He could already box in Monkey Boxing, but in SMB 3D he gets his own stats and moveset in Monkey Fight (this version of it plays like a platform fighting game). This means he can keep with YanYan, who’s the student of the strongest monkey martial art, and even his self proclaimed rival Jet, who’s a kung fu master.

AiAi
The Monkey Ball
If it wasn’t made clear already, this is a monkey that knows ball. By casting the magical spell “Ei-Ei-Poo!”, AiAi calls upon his iconic Monkey Ball. The ball itself has a few applications of its own. AiAi can open it to use it as a glider, remove one half so he can use the other one as a boat and even lets him breathe underwater. But perhaps its most important ability, it can straight up just fly. The Monkey Ball team does it for like, the entirety of SMB2’s story mode.
Monkey Fight Items
Items that provide upgrades towards AiAi’s punching glove
Monkey Race Items
Items that are mostly useful for attacking others directly, or messing with their ball. All of them are either one use or will work for a limited time.
Monkey Bounce Items
Monkey Bounce is a minigame where you bounce on top of squares in order to claim them, with the winner being the one that claims the most in total. These items will appear on certain blocks and will activate instantly once claimed.
Monkey Target Items
Provides AiAi with items that help soften his landing.
Monkey Cannon Items
In the Last Man Standing mode of Monkey Canon, AiAi is provided with special bricks that help him make a sturdier jenga type tower, plus offensive items that help him in taking down enemy towers.
Monkey Tag Items
Since 2 of the 3 items here are repeats from previous games, this minigame provides us with only one new item.
Monkey Boat Items
Items that AiAi will find inside crates, helping him in overtaking opponents during boat races.
Gun
It's the planet of the apes all over again. In the Monkey Shot minigames, AiAi wields a gun that lets him shoot down anyone in his way. Its standard mag contains 6 bullets, but the amount can be increased with certain power ups. If he ever fully runs out of bullets, he can replenish a few, though it takes a bit of time, leaving him vulnerable to attacks. It probably doesn’t shoot actual bullets, but it’s funnier to think it does.
Monkey Shot items
The items that help his aforementioned gun. They will bounce around in a ball, with AiAi having to shoot them out of them in order to use them. They will automatically activate once obtained
Machine Gun
In the Monkey Dogfight minigame, everyone is equipped with a machine that has unlimited ammo. They’re also capable of firing pineapple missiles when locking on a target.
Spaceship
Hovercraft
Submarine
Ship
Kart
Monkey Wars items
Banana Rumble Items

Eggs
Fitting to his name, eggs are Billy’s main attack method. By rolling them around, he runs into enemies in order to damage them. While in the air, he can perform a slam attack or a bounce jump. He can also roll them from a distance for better range, and they’ll always roll back straight to him. The more fruits he collects, the larger his respective eggs will get, which results in greater damage and makes opponents easier to hit. But it should be noted, they all share the same reachable max size and will not get any bigger than that, although they can all vary on how quickly you can reach said size. When they reach that max size, they will start glowing, ready to be hatched whenever Billy wants to.
There’s various eggs Billy can utilize, all with various mechanics, abilities and items. The one exception is the common white egg with a blue pattern and yellow dots (like the render above), which doesn’t offer anything. All the different egg types will be listed below.
Combs
Comb power ups will replace Billy’s standard comb when collected. Each one offers a different elemental effect on the egg he carries for as long as he has them on him. However, they all act the same way gameplay wise, as they only offer a small strength increase to his egg.
Wearable Items
These are items that Billy himself can wear, like a special hat or shoe. They usually give a mobility advantage, but can help in other ways too. These effects last for as long as he has them on him.
One Use Items
Items whose effects are a one and done deal. They can either have an instant activation or act as a limited time effect.
Explosives
Eggs that allow for boom boom kaboom stuff.
Support Animals
Animals that will aid Billy in battle. These little guys sweep the battlefield with wide aoe attacks or quick hectic movements.
Mounts
Animals that Billy can ride himself. Offer great versatility and attack power.
SEGA Characters
Eyup. SEGA sure loves its cameos. Eggs with the Sonic Team logo on them can spawn other SEGA characters to help Billy. However, almost all of them have basically the same attack pattern as any of the aforementioned support animals.
Abilities
AiAi
Chants
Comet Punch
Ninja Vanish
Flight
Spindash
Time Travel
So this one’s a weird one. Throughout SMB Adventure, you’ll meet the monkey in the above image that teaches AiAi how to perform all the various chants. If you 100% the game, you get the true ending and an extra cutscene at the end. Here he reveals that he’s actually AiAi from the future and is the creator of the monkey balls AiAi and his team use. Afterwards he takes Baby with him to return to his time.
Now all of this isn’t too out of the ordinary. Baby is consistently stated to be from the future, and so is Dr Bad Boon. The process also seems to be tied to the suit he’s wearing, as he does it instantly. The real issue is how applicable you think this is to AiAi, as his current self is not capable of doing it. It just means he’ll eventually be able to.

Sonic Riders
Extreme Gear
In Sonic Riders, we’re introduced to the extreme gear, a special hoverboard that is used for races. It runs on Air, a special fuel that powers it up. Accelerating will slowly consume Air, so it will constantly need to be refilled via doing various tricks, otherwise the user will fall off it and start running on foot, which slows them down a lot. AiAi’s signature extreme gear is the BANANA. It's well balanced in all its attributes and has an average fuel consumption.

Sonic Riders Zero Gravity
Extreme Gear
In Zero Gravity, extreme gear works differently than in the first entry. This time, the boards are fueled by GP (Gravity Points) and have the ability to manipulate gravity with the help of a little doohickey called Ark of the Cosmos. Unlike Air, GP is not required for the board itself to function and instead is used for performing Gravity Control and Gravity Dive. Gravity Control is an ability that will negate the user’s surrounding gravity, allowing them to choose which direction the gravity will pull them. Afterwards the user gets pulled into the selected direction at high speeds. This will also affect any surrounding objects and projectiles, which can later be thrown at opponents. Then we have Gravity Dive, which spawns a temporary black hole way ahead of the user, causing them to fly towards it due to its strong gravitational pull. Any nearby objects will start floating too. Billy’s signature extreme gear is the Power Egg, an ancestral extreme gear that originates from Morningland, now under the command of Billy.
Gear Parts
Gear Parts are performance enhancing technology that can be installed in the extreme gears, with the max amount being 3. Certain extreme gears can swap out gear parts, but some will also only allow the usage of 3 specific ones. The Power Egg falls in the latter category. There needs to be a certain amount of rings exchanged for a gear part’s ability to activate, and each one can only be used once in each race.
Capsule Items
Zero Gravity offers basically the same items that the first game did, so I’m only gonna be listing the new ones.

Before The Verdict
Kongri-la’s Sun
In Super Monkey Ball Adventure, we learn that the people of Kongri-la had the fucking sun tied up above their land so they could stay warm. Now this sun is blatantly very small, but it’s still an impressive feat. So how did they do this? That’s an excellent question….we have no idea. It’s never elaborated on and all we know is that they just did, so this makes the feat pretty inapplicable.
Now another related feat to this AiAi being able to survive inside this sun. Whenever he enters the classic Monkey Ball stages, you can see him flying towards it and the background of the stages clearly mimics the surface of the sun. Now how legit is this? Well him flying upwards towards it doesn’t mean he was actually flying inside it. Everytime you enter a stage he does this, it just happens that above the Kongri-la levels the sun is there. For a more direct counter, the last Kongri-la level can be entered when you arrive in the underground kingdom, and AiAi is still sent to the same looking stage. So clearly he’s not flying inside the sun.
However, one could argue that the background of those stages still indicates they take place inside the sun. Aside from the fact this only works if you think the sun is hollow, the background is just an aesthetic thing. Every stage’s background and aesthetic fits the land it takes place in, like how Jungle Island levels have this green grassy floor and an ocean in the background, or how the Monkitropolis stages have the same blue and yellow colors you see throughout the city, with a night sky in the background. So clearly, these stages do not take place inside the sun.
Starlight Swing
In Super Monkey Ball Step & Roll one of the minigames you can play is called Starlight Swing. It’s a game where you swing from the moon left and right to try to collect as many stars as you can before time runs out. Once the timer is finished, all the stars you’ve collected go into the sky and form a constellation. Now does this mean Star level AiAi or whatever? No, probably not. For starters, he very clearly is not the one creating the constellation, it’s just something that happens on its own. Secondly, nothing indicates he’s physically carrying all the stars, he’s just collecting them. It’s really just a cute little game that’s not meant to be taken seriously. I mean you’re swinging off a tiny moon while collecting stars that are very clearly not far away in space. So yeah, the scaling is doubtful.
The Chicken Elders’ crowing
In order to bring morning back to each land from the game, Billy needs to save each chicken elder that rules over it. This is because the chicken elders are the ones that raise the sun with a Cock-A-Doodle-Doo, and we see that any time we save them. So clearly, we’re talking about a pretty consistent and story important feat, no problem there. The scaling to the elders is also pretty straight forward. They were all turned into golden eggs by the crows and Dark Raven was described as unstoppable with the Giant Egg’s power.
The real issue is that nothing implies this should physically scale back to the elders. Aside from bringing the morning back, they don’t really do anything else throughout the game. They certainly don’t display any grand magic power or even fighting capabilities. The only one who implies that is Uri-Uri, as he states he was defeated before he could fight back, but in what way, we don’t know. So clearly, you don’t need to be powerful enough to move the sun to defeat the elders.
Light Speed Rabbish
Rabbish is one of the various animals Billy can use in a fight, with its main attack method being creating balls of light that explode around it. We know this because his attacks are the only ones capable of opening specific doors in the Giant Palace, which can only be opened when light shines upon them. Well the interesting thing about Rabbish is that, in his egg gallery description, he’s stated to be able to move at the speed of light. Gameplay wise though, Rabbish has never displayed such speed aside from his powers being light based. Even Queen Rabbish never moved that fast in their race against Rolly. At worst it would be a completely unsupported claim and at best would only scale to Rabbish themselves.
The Giant Egg’s great power
So at the start of the game, every land is shrouded in darkness due to Dark Raven’s army. However we know that’s because he trapped all the chicken elders. Once an elder is saved, the morning returns to their land. So obviously, Dark Raven’s magic is not the one responsible for each land being in darkness, it’s just the chicken elders not being there to do their job…. except for Giant Palace. Giant Palace is the last level of the game, and the neat thing about it is that it doesn’t have a chicken elder that rules it, as far as we know at least. What resides in Giant Palace though is the Giant Egg. The Giant Egg is constantly described as very important and powerful. It’s stated that it can grant wishes to anyone who controls it, give power to anyone that hatches it and even wars had started over it in the past. It’s the reason why the elders sealed it in the Giant Palace in the first place.
So since Giant Palace doesn’t have an elder, the Giant Egg would have to be the reason morning comes in the palace, right? Now for the record, we do see that once Dark Raven is defeated, the Giant Egg is restored back to normal and morning returns to the palace. But the thing is, the game never states this or implies it, so it’s still just an assumption.
But let’s assume for a sec that it is the reason morning comes back to the palace. Dark Raven did manage to hatch it and gain its power, great enough power to even destroy Billy’s chicken suit. Well we still run into the issue of, is this really the same power that raises the sun? Is it equal to that level of power? While yeah, it’s pretty obviously a power amp, to what extent is unknown. Nothing is ever stated on how powerful the Giant Egg’s power is, just that it gives you great power.
While the scaling isn’t impossible, we need to make assumptions on things that are never explained or stated in game.
One ground rule
Before getting into the verdict, I gotta set one ground rule. I’m gonna be equalising the effect for certain items for both. That means AiAi’s items that target monkey balls will work on Billy’s eggs and vice versa. It’s not exactly a one to one comparison, but it helps make their items interact with each other, and honestly will make discussion around them more interesting.
Verdict
Stats
We’re starting off with strength. Both of these characters have displayed similar low scale feats, like destroying rocks, rolling stuff much heavier than themselves (AiAi’s iron ball and Billy’s golden eggs) and have beaten any big bad that’s ever stood in their way. They both also have feats that can get way higher than their usual displays, like the chicken elders raising the sun or AiAi capturing enough stars to form a constellation. But as I already addressed in the BTV, these feats are not as impressive as they seem or just hard to scale. So without those, AiAi’s best feat would be scaling to Dr Bad Boon, who survives a fall from his space station all the way to earth, which was calced at 0.78 Tons. Billy’s best on the other hand would be his animal companions being strong enough to destroy a bunch of boulders in one hit, which gets 1.44 Tons. Billy himself should most likely scale to this level of power, since it’d be weird if his animal summons would be stronger by end game Dark Raven, who was implied to be the strongest around with the Giant Egg’s power. This would make him almost twice as strong as AiAi. Billy can also double his strength with Gorilla, widening that gap, although not by much. While the gap in strength isn’t big enough to cause serious issues for AiAi, Billy is still the one that’s ultimately gonna be stronger.
Now let’s talk speed. Hilariously enough, Billy has no speed feats. Like genuinely he has nothing. The best we have is Rabbish’s egg gallery description stating he can move at light speed. Rabbish has never portrayed such speed, and if anything, other animals are displayed as much faster in gameplay, like Oritta’s teleportation like movement. If we wanted to be generous, this would only scale to Rabbish themselves. AiAi on the other hand can fly all the way to space in a short time, which was calced at mach 54.7, absolutely blitzing Billy. Now it should be noted, this would probably only apply to AiAi’s movement speed, as he never reacted to anything on his way to Dr Bad Boon’s space station. You could also argue this would only apply to his flying speed, as AiAi never portrays such speed while rolling in his monkey ball. But either way, it’s speed that Billy himself has never portrayed or dealt with, so AiAi should safely take this category.
Arsenal & Abilities
Now this is the real meat of the discussion. Let’s start with arsenal. Both AiAi and Billy have numerous items and abilities to throw at each other, so let’s see first what equals out:
Both have ways to boost their speed (Speed Star for AiAi and Speed Shoes for Billy)
Both can battle in the water (AiAi’s Monkey Boat items and Kaboot for Billy)
Both have means of flight (AiAi’s monkey ball and various flying summons for Billy)
Both have ways to regain health (Bananas for AiAi and Heart Hat, Butterflies for Billy)
Both can raise their defense (Protection, Iron Ball, Typhoon, Barrier for AiAi and Turtle for Billy)
Both can stop time (Stop Watch for both)
Both can throw explosives at each other (Bowling Bomber for AiAi and Bomb for Billy)
Both can throw homing explosives at each other (Missiles for AiAi and Chick Bomb for Billy)
Both can throw ice attacks (Ice Cube, Ice Beam for AiAi and Richie for Billy)
Both can turn invisible (Invisibility Chant for AiAi and Chameleon for Billy)
So yeah, they can match each other in quite a few areas. Now granted, one thing AiAi definitely surpasses Billy at would be mobility. His Speedyball chant, kart and spaceship offer far better movement options that Billy can’t match. Even AiAi’s flight is far better, as he can freely do it even without his monkey ball, meanwhile the most Billy has shown was riding on Cipher’s back. And he certainly has never attempted any kind of aerial combat, unlike AiAi in Monkey Dogfight.
Both can also counter a handful of attacks against each other. Should Billy set AiAi on fire with Rikol? AiAi can use the Woodball chant to be unaffected. Should AiAi use that fire against Billy? Billy can use Clippen to take it out. Should AiAi shrink Billy with ShrinkBall? Billy has shown to be unaffected by that when using Mouse.
One thing to note is that there are a few options that aren’t particularly gonna be useful for AiAi. His Monkey Target and Monkey Cannon items for example aren’t gonna be particularly helpful in a direct confrontation, and neither would his Stickyball, Scalarball and Tetherball chants. Certain items are also weird in how applicable they’d be for AiAi in a versus scenario. Stuff like the Monkey Bounce items are things AiAi can’t easily use, as they can only be obtained through blocks on the ground, meaning they’d be tied to the rules of the minigame. He also can’t carry them around since they’re activated instantly once obtained. Same goes for the Monkey Shot ones, although those are probably a lot more usable since they’re just in monkey balls that will bounce in front of AiAi.
Meanwhile Billy’s overall arsenal is a lot more combat focused. Especially when it comes to his numerous support animals, all with their varying and hectic fighting styles. That’s not to say AiAi can’t still match that. He's got his punching glove that he can upgrade with his Monkey Fight items, he’s got his machine gun, his spaceship, his Monkey Shot Items, the numerous offensive options he gets from Monkey Wars (especially the tank and UFO) and numerous Monkey Race items. Even though Billy’s animals are, admittedly, a lot more helpful in a direct fight, AiAi has enough offensive options to not get overwhelmed too quickly.
Lastly, let’s talk about their most unique items. The one that would help them the most and would be difficult to deal with. AiAi’s best options would be:
Messing with Billy’s eggs by changing their shape with Polygon Ball or making them heavier with Gravity Bomb
Obstructing his vision with 3D Glasses, Phantom Thief Mask or Cake
Turning Billy into weights with Heavy Ball
Freeze would freeze everyone other than AiAi in place
Ghost making him intangible
Dance making Billy start hitting it against his will
Black Hole in general is really useful
Barrier removing status effects
On the other hand Billy’s best options would be:
Lion making him invincible
Tiger and Hawk breaking AiAi’s ball
Sheep putting AiAi into sleep
Fox stealing AiAi’s items
Dice restoring Billy’s health and lowering AiAi’s
Off the bat, while Barrier is super useful, almost none of Billy’s items induce status effects (except one, but we’ll talk about that later). They’re all instant activation items. While it could protect against them if AiAi were to already have it activated, it wouldn’t help counter in general Billy’s items before they take effect. Ghost, while also very useful, is only a temporary defensive measure, as AiAi can’t do anything else while in ghost form.
Polygon Ball and Gravity Bomb on the other hand, while only lasting for a bit, would directly mess with Billy’s main offensive option, requiring him to fall back on his secondary options. Same goes for any of his ways to obstruct Billy’s vision. All of these options would leave Billy defenseless for a short time, allowing AiAi to attack him directly or even destroy whatever eggs he’s carrying currently.
Billy’s Tiger and Hawk would outright destroy AiAi’s monkey ball, which would remove his main movement option. This isn’t too big of an issue, as AiAi can just conjure a new one with his chant, but it would remove any effects he had on his current ball and would still leave him vulnerable for a short time.
Lion is pretty useful, considering while AiAi has many defensive options, none of them provide actual invincibility. But it would just cancel out with Ghost, plus it doesn’t counter items that directly affect Billy like Sheep.
Fox is also super useful for Billy, as AiAi doesn’t have any item stealing options or any way to counter it. The only detriment is that it’s one use and it’s not guaranteed that Billy will steal a useful item, but it’s still a helpful item.
Dice is by far one of the most helpful items in Billy’s possession, as it can heavily lower AiAi’s health. This would also lower Billy’s too, but if he is already low on health, it will massively heal him instead, completely turning the tides. AiAi does have healing options with his bananas, but it would still open a small window of opportunity for Billy to overtake him.
Now let’s look at their options that would let them immobilize the other. AiAi’s would be Heavy Ball, Freeze, Dance and Black Hole while Billy’s would be Sheep. Heavy Ball probably wouldn’t be too useful, considering there’s not much AiAi could do to Billy while in that state. At best it would help him plan his next actions for a few seconds. Black Hole wouldn’t outright kill Billy, but it would immobilize him and any of his summons if sucked in it. However, due to its small size, it’s easily avoidable by just not getting close to it. Now Freeze, while super useful (considering it freezes everyone other than AiAi in place) is not something AiAi can easily use as explained already. Dance, however, is more easily obtainable and can be carried around. It would be unavoidable and would affect Billy and all of his support. Billy would not be able to counter them with Lion, considering it doesn’t counter the effects of Sheep, although the invincibility itself would still be active. Speaking of Sheep, it’s also an unavoidable move that would work on AiAi. Barrier would counter it, but he wouldn’t be able to activate it because, well, he’d be asleep. So both of them have one solid way to incap one another via Dance and Sheep. Of course though, it should be noted that all these items still only last for a very short time.
Obviously both of them have a lot to throw at each other, many ways to deal with each other’s options and many helpful trump cards. Ultimately, I couldn’t decide which one was better, so I call arsenal a tie.
…but abilities is a different story.
Billy’s one ability is his Courage, which allowed him to restore his chicken suit and purify Dark Raven’s darkness, turning it against him. So on the off chance that AiAi were to somehow destroy his suit, he’d be able to restore it. Darkness purification is completely useless though, as AiAi has nothing that utilizes darkness.
AiAi on the other hand has his few magical chants, can fly even without his monkey ball, appear out of thin air like a ninja, spin dash for better mobility and the elephant in the room, time travel if one wished to count it. I personally don't find it usable but it is something you can argue for. He can also always restore his monkey ball back with “Ei-Ei-Poo!”, something Billy can’t do with his eggs. But by far the biggest difference between the two, AiAi can still fight without his monkey ball, while Billy can’t do anything without his eggs. AiAi is very much capable of throwing hands himself and can easily give Billy the business if it comes to it. Yeah certain cqc fighters like Runny, Oritta and Knuckles could help, but it still doesn’t change the fact Billy himself can’t really do much in a direct 1v1 fight. AiAi easily takes abilities.
Tertiary Factors
AiAi has beaten the likes of Dr Bad Boon, the Naysayers, Captain Crabuchin and his crew. Billy has dealt with many crows, all their bosses and even Dark Raven himself, their leader. Dark Raven is also super old, as he reincarnates every 100 years. None of the enemies AiAi has faced really stack up to the crows being, you know, a whole army that took over Morning Land. Dr Bad Boon is a joke villain who’s most high scale feat was him wanting to turn all bananas curry flavored with a space beam, the Naysayers are a handful of monsters that don’t anything crazy, Crabuchin and his crew are more impressive than the former 2 admittedly but still nowhere near the scale of the crows. Billy clearly has more experience in head on fights and battling against more impressive threats.
Now let’s talk skill. AiAi has dabbled in a bunch of different sports, but being able to keep up with the likes of Jet, a kung fu master, is far more impressive than anything in Billy’s verse. Yeah Dark Raven is super old, but he’s not some kind of fighting genius or anything, and neither are any of the other crows. The only counter Billy has is Runny’s egg gallery description saying she knows karate and Kaboot being called an “amphibious martial artists”, but to what extent for either is unknown, and they never portray such skill in game. It’s not like Billy would be at that level of skill anyways. Meanwhile for Jet it’s blatantly stated that he’s a master of his. AiAi takes skill.
Crossovers
Even though I’ve already stated I’m not gonna be factoring crossovers into who I think wins, I figured I’d at least talk about what’d change in case they were to be counted.
Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing automatically cancels out via both being in that game. Both have their own extreme gears and share most of the items from both the Riders games, with Billy only getting one more useful one (since the other two are detrimental). Billy’s extreme gear is far better however. He doesn’t have to worry about running out of Air since his runs on GP, and his control over gravity make him incredibly more versatile. Gravity Control would let him grab any projectile AiAi could throw at him and throw it back, and AiAi certainly has no way to protect himself against Gravity Dive’s AOE, especially since he doesn’t possess an Ark of the Cosmos.
But that’s kinda where it ends for Billy, unlike AiAi who is featured and generally referenced in far more games. AiAi would have his transforming vehicles, all the Transformed items, his Sega Heroes skills that allow him to heal and shield himself, all the Crossworlds items and the tons of gadgets. Billy’s 3 gear parts can not even be compared to the library of gadgets AiAi would have access to. Nevermind the fact Crossworlds provides some ludicrous items. Laser and Drill for better movement, making Billy unable to tag him. Numerous ways to get rid of Billy’s items like Slicer, Weight, Dark Chao and the devious Slime (which targets everyone). King Boom Boom who’s an unavoidable homing attack too.
Admittedly, Billy’s gravity manipulation is incredibly more useful and versatile than anything too specific on AiAi’s side, but just the sheer amount of stuff Billy would have to deal with is kinda ludicrous. Especially since he can’t spam his gravity moves, which burn on GP in order to be used. AiAi just cleanly sweeps due to quantity.
Conclusion
In terms of stats, Billy surprisingly was twice as strong as AiAi and could always double that strength with Gorilla. While the gap in strength wasn’t too large to spell trouble for AiAi, Billy is still the one who is always gonna be the stronger of the two.
Sadly however, the same can’t be said for speed, as AiAi absolutely dominated that category with his greater travel speed. For Billy to keep up, we’d have to take Rabbish’s lightspeed statement at face value, which would at best only scale to him.
Equipment was a tricky one to go through, as both had a plethora of options to throw at each other. They could match and counter each other in many ways, and even had a few aces up their sleeves that could completely change the tides. Billy’s arsenal was a lot more combat focused thanks to his numerous support animals that can come to his aid, but AiAi had enough items to keep up and not get overwhelmed. Ultimately, deciding who could surpass the other proved difficult, and so they tied in that category.
Abilities is where Billy came short however, as his Courage couldn’t quite stack with the ones AiAi brought to the table. But perhaps the largest difference between them was that Billy relies on his eggs for everything he does, which are vulnerable to attacks and can be broken. AiAi on the other hand, can very much take care of himself without his monkey ball, and even then he could always restore it back with his magical chant.
While Billy clearly had the overall better experience fighting more varied and dangerous threats, AiAi being able to keep up with kung fu master Jet put him at a level of skill far greater than anything in Billy’s verse.
Lastly, if we were to take crossover into account, it would only make things even worse for Billy. While his gravity manipulation was extremely useful, it simply paled in comparison to the sheer quantity of what AiAi has to throw at him. The result of going up against a more successful video game character.
